Amplify ELA

Amplify ELA is a blended English language arts curriculum designed specifically for grades 6–8. With Amplify ELA, students dive into a range of rich and diverse texts, supported by strategic routines and a variety of interactions that develop the critical capacities and build the vocabulary, knowledge, and skills students need to read deeply. Students are engaged through dynamic texts, lively classroom discussions, and meaningful digital experiences.

This site is designed to help you become familiar with the program and to guide you through initial preparation for implementing Amplify ELA in your classroom.

Helpful tips
Planning and pacing

What features are available to supplement Amplify ELA implementation?

Backwards planning

To think strategically about planning your upcoming Amplify ELA unit, try backwards planning to keep the end in mind and make sure you’re meeting learning objectives efficiently.

Watch our video on this strategy to learn more.

Assign feature

The Assign feature within the Amplify ELA curriculum makes it easy to distribute assignments and activities to your students.

When you navigate to the lesson, you’ll notice a blue Assign button on the Lesson Brief, which allows you to assign multiple activities simultaneously.

A settings panel gives you the option to pick class sections and due dates.

Students will get notified of every activity assigned to them via the bell feature at the top right of their program.

Digital Novel Guides

Amplify’s Digital Novel Guide units are adapted from the Novel Guide PDFs in the Amplify Library.

You can find them in the Flexible Units section of the Year Overview.

Each guide organizes activities into five lessons covering a different set of reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Lessons feature the digital novel embedded alongside submittable student work, including auto-scored Solos. These guides can also work to accompany print texts.

Differentiation

What kind of instruction is available for students who need additional support?

Embedded differentiation

In Amplify ELA lessons, a plus symbol on any activity icon indicates that the activity offers embedded differentiation levels with support and extension activities to meet the needs of all learners—including multilingual/English learners (ML/ELs), as well as students ready for additional challenge.

Directions in the Differentiation section of the Lesson Brief explain the types of support provided in each level and when these supports may be helpful for particular students.

This Differentiation section also contains additional suggestions and ideas for supporting English learners apart from the embedded differentiated scaffolds.

And in the Student Level Assignments screen, you can easily drag and drop student names into the differentiation level appropriate for their needs.

Flex Days

Starting in Unit B, every four to six lessons culminate with the Amplify Flex Day. The Flex Days are an opportunity for you to provide students with needed grammar instruction and also support additional practice in a targeted area of reading, writing, or language.

You can review students’ Embedded Assessment Measure (EAM) results and note recommended groupings for students to work within the Flex Day Activities that target key areas of reading, writing, discussion, and language skills—including activities specifically designed to support ML/EL students, as well as students who need fluency support.

Spotlight

The Spotlight app within the Amplify ELA platform is a virtual forum for you to share student writing. In it, you can easily highlight examples of your students’ work and project excerpts for instruction—or simply appreciation!

Assessments

Do you have support and guidance around ELA assessments?

Answer Validation

Did you know Amplify has an Answer Validation feature to reveal auto-scored answers to students for Solos and assessments through Classwork?

In Classwork, you’ll see two checkboxes at the bottom of expanded Solos and assessments: Mark Incorrect and Reveal Correct. Both boxes are unchecked by default, and students can edit the activity without any correct/incorrect markers on their responses.

For assessments, editability and visibility of revealed answers will also depend on whether you have locked or unlocked the assessment lesson for each class.

To learn more about how to use this feature, check out our dedicated help article about the feature.

Embedded Assessment Measure

The Embedded Assessment Measure (EAM) collects data in three core academic domains as students work with the daily lessons, enabling you to assess how students are responding to classroom instruction, gather information about what extra support they might need, and begin to understand how they may perform on state testing.

EAM reports allow teachers to easily track and interpret student performance against the three core domains of reading, writing, and language without ever interrupting the flow of daily instruction to test students. Teachers then receive EAM reports that provide an at-a-glance look at which students are at risk in each of the three core domains. EAM reports also provide recommendations about how to group students for differentiated instruction and extra practice during Flex Days.

To learn more about this, check out our dedicated help article about the measure

Interim Assessments

Amplify ELA’s Interim Assessments are designed to give teachers baseline data on students’ proficiency with reading and writing standards and to measure students’ progress with these standards over the course of the year.

Each grade level has two reading Interim Assessments and two writing Interim Assessments. Teachers are encouraged to administer the first reading and writing Interim Assessments within the first four to eight weeks of the school year, and to administer the second reading and writing Interim Assessments four to eight weeks before any end-of-year state or national assessments.

Check out our dedicated help article about Interim Assessments for more information.
